Dr. Barry Schlafstein, GYN

Longtime Savannah gynecologist Dr. Barry Schlafstein is participating in My Telfair Doc. He specializes in gynecology and urogynecology.

Dr. Schlafstein graduated cum laude from Cornell University. He received his medical degree from The University of Miami School of Medicine, earning admission to the elite AOA medical honor society. Dr. Schlafstein completed his internship, residency and chief residency in gynecology and obstetrics at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. 

Dr. Schlafstein is a board certified diplomat of The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and has sub-specialty board certification in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (Urogynecology). In 2021, he fulfilled all the requirements set forth by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and obtained certification for focus practice designation in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery.

Dr. Schlafstein has been in practice for more than 20 years and has devoted his professional life to understanding and treating the unique gynecologic needs of women, specifically as they relate to hormonal regulation, urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse and the need to minimize the pain and risk involved in gynecological surgery.

Dr. Schlafstein has been a pioneer of minimally invasive gynecologic surgical technique in Savannah and is recognized nationally for his concentration and expertise in the treatment of female urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. He has performed more than 3,000 laparoscopic gynecological procedures, as well as more than 1,000 vaginal mesh pelvic reconstructive and urinary incontinence surgical procedures. Physicians from throughout the region refer their patients to Dr. Schlafstein for treatment.

He also has written several articles on these subjects and has been awarded for his gynecologic surgical teaching. Read his publications here. Dr. Schlafstein has been recently recognized as the most outstanding OB/GYN in Savannah as voted by readers of the Savannah Morning News.

Dr. Schlafstein's professional society memberships include: Diplomate National Board of Medical Examiners; Diplomate American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology; Fellow American College Obstetricians and Gynecologists; Society for Laparoendoscopic Surgeons; American Association Gynecologic Laparoscopists; and American Urogynecologic Society.
