Telfair BirthPlace at the Mary Telfair Women’s Hospital continues the vision of Mary Telfair by offering state-of-the-art technology, specialized services and the region’s top specialists. Our physicians and nurses are trained and experienced to care for you before, during and after labor and delivery.
Telfair BirthPlace delivers nearly 3,000 babies a year with skill and compassion. The center features 25 mother/baby rooms and 14 labor and delivery rooms. In addition, we have a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to care for the tiniest of our patients. Telfair BirthPlace is holistically focused on the physiologic and psychosocial needs of the patient and family. Our care is delivered in a patient-focused environment by our self-directed care teams.

Our History
Mary Telfair was born in 1789 and was truly a woman ahead of her time. She was independent, well-traveled and full of dreams. One of her most significant visions was to establish a special place where women could receive respectful, understanding and compassionate care for their health needs.
In 1875, only a few days before her death, Mary placed a provision in her will that allowed for the erection of such a hospital in Savannah. The Telfair Hospital for Females opened in 1886.
In 1960, The Telfair Hospital for Females joined with Candler General Hospital to become its official obstetrical unit. In 1997, Candler General Hospital signed a joint operating agreement with St. Joseph’s Hospital, creating the region’s largest healthcare provider.
St. Joseph’s/Candler continues Mary Telfair’s vision: providing a system of compassionate care that puts the physical and emotional needs of women and their families first.
